KIYO - A Legacy

3 min read

KIYO is named after my grandmother, Kiyoko.

And while this may look like the beginning of something new, in so many ways, it feels like the continuation of something that started generations ago.

Growing up, my grandmother shared so much of herself with me. She taught me things. She shared recipes and traditions. She showed me little ways of caring for myself and caring for others. We talked, laughed and shared countless ordinary moments that I didn’t realize at the time would become some of the ones I treasured most.

Some of my sweetest memories are incredibly simple. Sitting together. Learning from her. Watching her do the things she loved. Being a girl in the presence of a woman who had already lived so much life. At the time, I thought she was teaching me how to do things. Now I realize she was giving me pieces of herself.

And that’s really where KIYO begins.

The Things We Pass Along

There’s something beautiful about the way women share life with one another. Sometimes it’s something handed down through generations. Sometimes it’s something your mother taught you without ever realizing she was teaching you. Sometimes it’s your grandmother’s recipe. And sometimes it’s simply your best friend saying, You have to try this. A way of moving your body. A wellness ritual. A recipe you make over and over. Something beautiful for your home. A product you swear by. A place you can’t stop talking about. A piece of advice you never forgot.

Some things are inherited.

Others we discover for ourselves.

But the really good ones?

We pass them along.

KIYO may carry my grandmother’s name, but its story is bigger than one woman.

It’s about generations, the women who raise us, shape us and leave pieces of themselves with us.

My grandmother gave me so many of the traditions and little pieces of life that inspired KIYO. My mother shaped the woman who now gets to carry them forward. And throughout my own life, I’ve continued collecting things of my own, things I’ve learned, tried, loved and immediately wanted to share with someone else.

My grandmother and I.
My grandmother and I.

From Simply Rooted to KIYO

For years, so much of this philosophy has had a physical home through Simply Rooted.

What began as a yoga studio has grown into something much bigger: a modern movement + wellness studio built around the belief that wellness isn’t one practice, one class or one way of moving. And it certainly doesn’t end when we walk out of the studio.

Wellness follows us home. It’s in our kitchens and our routines. It’s movement and rest. It’s what we bring into our homes, how we gather, where we travel, what we learn, how we care for ourselves and how we care for one another.

Simply Rooted is where we get to practice so much of that together.

KIYO is where the conversation gets to expand.

So, What Is KIYO? KIYO is a lifestyle + wellness editorial built around a very simple question:

Is it worth passing along?

We’ll talk about movement and wellness, of course. But we’ll also talk about food. Beauty. Home. Style. Travel. Rituals. Experiences. Stories. People. Places. Things we’re loving and things we’re learning. Not because they all fit neatly into one category. Because they’re all part of how we live. And that’s what KIYO is really about.

Living well and sharing what we learn along the way.

What Comes Next

We have ideas for KIYO that go far beyond what you see today. And we’re intentionally not rushing them. We want to discover. Test. Learn. Listen. And be thoughtful about what deserves to become part of this world. Because if we’re going to put the KIYO name on something, share it with you or tell you that we love it, we want that recommendation to mean something. We want you to trust that it has earned its place here.

There will be more to discover.

More to experience.

And, eventually, a few things we can’t wait to put into your hands.

But those stories can wait for another day.

For now, this is simply the beginning.

For Kiyoko

My grandmother was an incredible woman.

I miss her more than I could ever put into words.

Her name was Kiyoko, and KIYO carries a little piece of her forward. But KIYO isn’t meant to live in the past. It’s about taking what we’ve been given, adding what we learn along the way, and continuing to share it with one another. From the women who came before us. To the women beside us. And eventually, to the women who come after us.

Welcome to KIYO.

Worth passing along.

We’re just getting started.
